The play ended just when I pulled up. I watched as the crowd came through the theater doors. First there were the grumpy old men, dragging their wives—the type of people who stood in the aisle during the applause so there were no impediments to their egress. Then the business people, already on their phones, already attempting to make up for the 150 minutes in which they were unable to influence the world. Then the restless but savvy folks, the ones who wanted to leave and drink but didn’t want to look as though they were in a rush to leave and drink. Then, the slow, the infirm, and the true lovers of the theater—the people who liked to sit and chat, or stand and stretch, who didn’t want to rush away from the velvet seats and inlaid walls, who didn’t consider a play something to be checked off the list—Saw that! Check. Saw that! Check, but who wanted to be thrilled, moved, shifted—the ones who wanted the spell to last.
